Abstract
The US National Science Foundation International Research Experience for students (NSF IRES) program is designed support “development of a diverse, globally engaged workforce with world-class skills.” An essential aspect of IRES programs is that the research would not be possible without working in a particular, unique field site. NSF IRES programs are particularly suitable for research on the often very localized experiences of disasters and displacement. In this talk, I will discuss experiences with developing an IRES program in Rwanda to study disasters and displacement. Specifically, I will discuss student recruitment, student research mentoring, practical issues of working in foreign research field sites, and preliminary outcomes the research related to modeling disaster resilience of displaced people. This talk will be of interest to researchers, educators and students looking to be engaged with international research experiences that can potentially be funded by the US National Science Foundation.
