Abstract
This presentation will report results of a case study of the use of hybrid flexible modality (HyFlex) with two undergraduate geographic information systems at the University of Illinois (UIUC) in the Spring semester of 2022. Although there has been extensive exploratory and qualitative research on student experiences or implementation challenges with HyFlex, emergence of empirical research on HyFlex effectiveness is more recent, and there currently appears to be limited research focusing on instruction in GIS. The analysis revealed a number of fine-grained interrelationships between academic characteristics and levels of online participation in the classes, but the overall results in this case study were consistent with existing research in finding only an insignificant negative relationship between levels of online participation and metrics of academic performance. However, the use of HyFlex in the context of a residential university raises a host of secondary institutional and pedagogical issues.
