Abstract
The term “superstorm” has no formal definition. Yet superstorms cause outsize economic, social, and other impacts. Society’s vulnerability to such storms is increasing, and climate change could make them more likely. Formally defining the term will aid in better communicating the hazard and improve the ability of the those in harm’s way to take steps to reduce their vulnerability.
Using examples of superstorms from 1913, 1950, 1993, and 2012, I will provide some criteria that set these storms apart from other cyclones. I will also discuss how a modern superstorm might disrupt routine life and the costs it would impose. Finally, I will end with a call to action for further research in this area.
