Description:
Rural geography in the Global North has traditionally focused on communities and regions that are coded as white. This has erased both the deep histories of settler colonialism and racist violence that has produced unjust landscapes and marginalized the diversity of voices of those writing about and living in these places. This Global North-centric scholarship has sidelined the vibrant traditions of rural geography scholarship and practices in the Global South. This session seeks to open up a space of critical reflection and discussion of broadening and deepening the field of rural geography and rural scholarship more broadly to center issues of race, ethnicity, class, gender, sexuality, language, nation, ability, and other dimensions of difference and disparity. It will feature the keynote address by engaged rural scholar Loka Ashwood together with reflections by Christy Hyman and Lavanya Gupta, all contributing different and diverse voices of this growing field. The session will also provide time for audience discussion and interaction to build a network of those interested in infusing issues of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion in rural geography and beyond.
