Description:
This session explores the relationship between anti-colonial theory and praxis, each paper engaging this theme from a particular dimension of our work.
Some threads we explore:
- How the everyday social practices of people under assault engage to survive may ask us to question hegemonic categories of thought such as social death.
- That art itself is an often unrecognized mode of political theorization.
- That scholarship too, inspired by anti-colonial struggles, may be revitalized when we approach it as creative work.
- That the process of writing, when approached as spiritual work in relation to one’s lineage, transforms both the writer and the text.
Each of the papers in this session ask us to think of scholarship as something more than the labor of analysis. We see our work as being deeply grounded in relationships to place, people, and traditions that we care for, as we navigate and move across boundaries “between the studied and the studying”, and how we learn from and begin to embody the “methods of relational care” we study in ourselves and our scholarship.
