Abstract
China opened its retail industry to foreign investment in 1992. Since then, many foreign retailers have operated business in the emerging Chinese retail sector. They played an important role in the retail revolution in China, especially in the 1990s and early 2000s. However, no international retailers have had lasting success in China. A massive wave of divestment of foreign retailers from China has been observed in recent years. This paper analyzes the changing roles of international retailers in the Chinese retail sector. We examined three groups of international retailers, namely European retailers, North American retailers, East and Southeast Asian retailers, to identify major factors contributing to their unsuccessful expansion in the Chinese retail industry.
