Description:
Urban floods are becoming more severe, lasting longer, and occurring more frequently because of rapid urbanization and climate change. Although traditional structural flood mitigation infrastructure (e.g., drainage systems, levees) are effective in urban areas, their effectiveness in the face of extreme rainfall events and increased development largely depend on the capacity and location of such systems, making complementary solutions important. Nature-based solutions (NBS), which are also referred to ecosystem-based conservation, restoration, and management approaches, contribute to a wide variety of water-related ecosystem services such as flood regulation, stormwater management, and water purification. NBS are generally acknowledged as one technique to control and regulate urban floods, especially surface runoff reduction. Yet, there remains limited theoretical, spatial, and empirical understanding how NBS address urban flooding at multiple scales. Such understanding is needed to support ecosystem-based flood mitigation.
