Abstract

In this paper, I examine the scaling up or amplification of individual stories of flight from conflict, through international media representations and political representations. By comparing specific media representations in the U.S. of the resurgence of the Taliban and U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan in August 2021, and the Russian invasion of Ukraine February, 2022. I use this comparison to reveal the ways in which race and gender are represented and discursively weaponized as a reflection of macro-scale geopolitics.
