Description:
While the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect countries around the world, a sense of normalcy has returned to our everyday lives. Political and cultural responses to the health, economic, environmental, and social challenges that affected global communities during the height of the pandemic still shape our world and will continue to do so into the future. Current geospatial research and application development draws on the lessons learned as we responded to pandemic challenges and evolves to focus on post-pandemic concerns.
Pandemic policies such as shutdowns, quarantines, and social distancing drove a rapid shift in patterns of human mobility and urban dynamics. Disruption of activities related to business, leisure, and healthcare led to temporary and enduring changes in human behavior, movement, communication, and interaction. Shared geospatial data facilitated the development of diverse applications to monitor, map, analyze, predict, and evaluate the impact of the pandemic on human mobility and urban dynamics, and vice versa. Opportunities arise to adapt these methodologies to the context of post-pandemic society based on lessons learned from pandemic responses and examine how we define success. Geospatial scientists provide unique perspectives in the further development of tools aimed to assist policymakers and public health officials in the identification and prediction of future epidemics as well as the creation of related policies to mitigate negative outcomes.
To facilitate discussions on human mobility and urban dynamics research in the post-pandemic era, this virtual paper session focuses on research agendas related to evolving geospatial methods of epidemiological research and progressive solutions.
