Description:
The status of women is an ongoing and critical conversation in the discipline of geography. Although the number of women in geography in the US has increased, it is unclear how they are faring in terms of equity and advancement due to a lack of comprehensive studies in recent decades. This project, organized by the Status of Women in Geography specialty group of the American Association of Geographers, aims to 1) examine the status of women in geography since 2000; 2) analyze past research findings to gain insights about concerns and experiences of women and other marginalized groups in the discipline; and 3) provide recommendations to the AAG and affiliated geography departments for change in promoting and supporting women in the field.
The panel discussion will draw from historical and current studies to examine the status of women based on race/ethnicity/gender and national origin within the context of justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion (JEDI) issues across departments and in the AAG. The discussion will address the concerns and experiences of women and other underrepresented groups in geography. We invite participants to share their insights and recommendations about how to enhance diversity and promote inclusion in the discipline of geography.
