Description:
Given recent interest in projects documenting and studying racially restrictive covenants and other forms of racially discriminatory housing practices, such as redlining, this interdisciplinary panel brings together a diverse group of projects to discuss the state of the field. Racially restrictive covenants were agreements restricting the sale of properties to specific groups (usually based on race, ethnicity, and/or immigration status). While technically banned by the Fair Housing Act of 1968, the covenants shaped and continue to impact the spatial patterns of American cities and the lived realities of many Americans. Over the past 20 years, a variety of projects have been working to document, map, and study restrictive covenants and other racially discriminatory housing practices, The panel, composed of team members from projects across the United States, will explore regional similarities and differences, their geographies and temporalities, and their constructions of race.
