Description:
There has been consistent debate around the concept of variegation in geography and its applicability to urbanism (as well as to rural contexts). Variegated economic life in geography as pioneered by Peck and Theodore (2004) was an attempt to attune the varieties of capitalism approach to a more spatially nuanced articulation as to how economic policy travels under neoliberalisation. In this they attempted to expose the systemic and relational currents that underly various policy interventions at differing territorial scales. Latterly, this has been critiqued by Robinson et al. (2022) due to a shortcoming in its tendency to assert pre-determined outcomes. This session looks at both the possibilities and limitations to the notion of variegated economies and particularly whether there is scope for progressive approaches to socioeconomic and political development. Geography has had rich history with regards to progressive forms of development, examples being: the diverse (Gibson-Graham, 2008 ) and alternative economies literature; the social economy (Amin et al. 2002; Thompson et al. 2020); and more recently ideas around green transition (Chatterton, 2016; Chatterton and Pusey, 2020) the foundational economy (Russell et al. 2022); new municipalism (Thompson, 2020), and economic democracy (Cumbers, 2012 & 2020). We, therefore, are keen for papers that address the notion of variegation alongside papers that look for alternative economic approaches.
