Description:
After several years of public investment, technological innovation and improvement, and policy implementation, there is now significant momentum towards mass-scale adoption of alternative fuel vehicles (AFVs) in some places throughout the world, particularly in plug-in electric vehicle (PEV) sales. Combined with the continued proliferation of shared mobility services, e-mobility and micro-mobility options, and the ongoing consideration of how best to integrate connected and automated vehicle (CAV) technologies into transportation systems, potentially dramatic changes for the future of transportation are likely already underway. This is important, as cities and regions continue to evaluate how best to address a host of long-term environmental, social, and economic issues inherent in the present-day transportation sector. As these transitions unfold, there is a continued need to better understand the factors encouraging and/or discouraging adoption of these technologies and services, likely feedbacks that will impact the form of cities and regions, their impact on the sustainability of transportation, and the influence on residential and employer location choices. It is also uncertain how the COVID-19 pandemic has shaped these factors. Geographers are uniquely situated to comprehensively evaluate how people currently use and consider these emerging transportation technologies and services, and the implications of future and more widespread adoption.
