Description:
Professional and career development of women in the geospatial sciences (GIS, remote sensing, cartography, and related mapping sciences) usually start seeding from graduate education. As women in higher education, we help to mold minds to advance spatial solutions and improve students' understanding of the environment, but we should also think about ways we can better support them in this rough journey to meet their professional goals. Continuing the ideas of the UCGIS (University Consortium of Geographic Information Science) - TRELIS (Training and Retaining Leaders in STEM-Geospatial Science) workshop, in this panel, we will discuss the opportunities and challenges women geospatial graduate students face while pursuing research/academic careers. We will particularly focus on two areas: (1) pressure of graduate life as a woman, an international, a minority (BIPOC), or a first-generation student, (2) career opportunities.
From the lessons learned from our January GradWINGS (Graduate Women In GIScience) workshop, we will describe examples and case studies of best practices to develop support and mentoring networks for women+ graduate students . We will also explore future needs to discuss the impacts on research, education, and practice.
