Description:
Geospatial artificial intelligence (GeoAI) has broad applications in the geosciences. One promising area of GeoAI research is the detection and recognition of geomorphic features by AI. Image classification is at the core of classic machine learning (ML) functions. Yet, new and novel applications in ML feature detection and recognition in the geosciences are unveiled in academic journals seemingly every month. Likewise, advances in deep learning (DL) have allowed geoscientists to overcome many of the data issues constraining ML applications in our earth science fields. Whether it’s hydrologic feature extraction employing traditional ML image segmentation from remote sensing and elevation data or the ability of DL to identify and predict short-term weather patterns from satellite images, GeoAI is transforming how we observe, measure, and predict natural phenomenon.
