Description:
The panel discussion will be built around a paper “Humanistic GIS: Towards a Research Agenda” recently published by the Annals of AAG (112[6], 1576-92). This paper proposes four primary roles of GIS with respect to interactions between humans, GIS, and place: embodiment GIS, hermeneutic GIS, autonomous GIS, and background GIS. This proposed humanistic perspective demonstrates a sincere quest to develop and use GIS in ways that will be more empathetic and better for humanity. With this overarching framing, the panel aims to discuss the humanistic GIS and its theoretical and empirical potentials for the pressing needs in today’s GIScience, and envision a humanistic rewire of GIScience onward.
As the relevance to Yi-Fu Tuan, we dedicate this session to his memory.
