These panel sessions honor the life and work of Dr. David Mark who passed away on September 24, 2022. David Mark was Professor Emeritus at University at Buffalo following his retirement in 2012. He was the director of the University at Buffalo site of NCGIA, a member of UB's Center for Cognitive Science and the National Center for Ontological research. David has written or co-authored more than 220 publications and supervised more than 62 graduated theses or dissertations. He was a founding member of both GIScience and COSIT academic conferences as well as involved in Vespucci Summer Institute. He was the project director of two NSF-funded IGERT interdisciplinary projects in Geographic Information Science in the amount of ~$6 million in 1998 and 2003 which furthered the research on Geographic Information Science with the support of more than 50 doctoral level trainees. In 2014, a special issue of the International Journal of Geographical Information Science (Vol 28, Issue 6 https://www.tandfonline.com/toc/tgis20/28/6) celebrated the depth and breadth of Dr. Mark's research and influence on GIScience and other areas of cognition, ontology and spatial science. David Mark was an avid birder who scheduled birding trips all over the world with his numerous conferences, many of which he was an invited keynote or speaker. He was known for his intelligence, deep thinking and questioning, and his quirky sense of humor.
