Description:
Many early-career faculty in Geography and Geoscience departments are placed in a classroom teaching human geography or world regional geography at the introductory level, with or without prior teaching experience. Many graduate students are lucky enough to get teaching experience in these types of classes, but many do not until they are in their first academic position (TT or NTT). This session will compare practices and discuss methods for teaching such courses. It will bring together a diverse group of faculty, all currently teaching a human or world geography-style introductory course. The participants will share their experience teaching the course, their format for the course, and what does and does not work in the classroom (projects vs. exams, textbook choices, modality – face-to-face, hybrid, online asynchronous or synchronous, field studies, etc.). Anyone interested is invited to also share their experiences in teaching the course, along with ideas on how to give students the best experience concerning learning this type of content.
