Abstract
How can one effectively and efficiently gauge levels of sustainable development within the rural context? Our exploration of previous literature revealed a methodological gap in utilizing publicly available data to comprehensively evaluate rural sustainability within the United States. Synthesizing indicators from domestic and international studies, this research proposes an accessible methodology for understanding rural sustainability at the county level. The framework encompasses targets and indicators measuring three interconnected dimensions: industrial development and economic growth, human settlements and resident well-being, and ecosystem service and environmental health.
This poster presents preliminary findings from applying the proposed methodology to all non-metropolitan counties in Texas. Results illustrate sustainability performance by individual indicator, across each of the three dimensions, and an aggregate overall sustainability score. These visualizations offer a nuanced understanding of the strengths and weaknesses of rural sustainability within the state. Following methodological refinement and validation, the study will assess rural sustainability across the contiguous United States, identifying lagging dimensions and enabling interstate comparisons. This broader analysis will illuminate regional disparities and strengths in rural sustainable development.
Ultimately, this research adapts and expands upon existing methodologies to better analyze and understand sustainable rural development in the US at the county level. By providing a readily applicable framework and leveraging publicly accessible data, this project aims to inform policy decisions and promote target interventions to enhance rural sustainability nationwide. The poster will showcase the proposed methodology, preliminary findings from Texas, and the planned scope of the national-level analysis.
