Gentrification is a pervasive part of the city’s inner ring suburbs of the Minneapolis-St. Paul (Twin Cities) Metropolitan area . One-time industrial buildings and vacant lots have been converted into mid-rise apartments and mixed-use development. However, this comes with concerns about the displacement of prior residents as higher-skilled and higher income professionals move into an area. Using census data for the past 50 years, I mapped out the changes in demographics, household income, race, level of education, and median age in Minneapolis and St. Paul census tracts to create a map of the twin cities that has been gentrified. I argue that the most gentrified neighborhoods in the Twin Cities aren’t necessarily the neighborhoods with the most modern or most recently renovated architecture, and that gentrification is a much less visible pattern of development than perhaps previously thought.
