Through this session, we aim to invite scholars working at the intersection of urban studies, GIS, and data science to address key questions about how geospatial big data can advance our understanding of urban systems and support urban planning & management.
Description:
The proliferation of geospatial big data has transformed our ability to understand urban problems. Cities today create massive amounts of location-based data through mobile devices, sensors, social media, transportation systems, etc. These urban big data offer opportunities to approach urban problems at different scales. However, harnessing geospatial big data for urban studies presents challenges in data integration, processing, and analysis. Traditional urban research methods must be adapted to handle the volume, velocity, and variety of urban big data. This session explores cutting-edge approaches to leverage geospatial big data for urban research, including but not limited to real-time urban sensing, human mobility analysis, urban changes & retrofitting, and urban service accessibility. We aim to bridge the gap between data science techniques and urban theory & problems, examining both methodological innovations and their practical applications in understanding the urban area.
