Abstract
The Census Bureau’s International Database (IDB) has been a source of data for population estimates and projections for over 200 countries for several decades. Since August 2023, the IDB includes population estimates and projections for over 15,000 subnational areas within a selection of countries. This presentation introduces the new subnational data in the IDB and discusses the sources of geographic names, including examples of applications from the Foreign Names Committee of the U.S. Board on Geographic Names. The presentation also discusses the subnational population estimates, which are available by 5-year age groups and sex. The subnational estimates and projections are fit to national-level estimates in the IDB for selected years. They also match subnational estimates provided in geographically enabled data products that are available through the International Programs Center's Global Population Mapping webpage.
