Abstract
Modern airports around the world are increasingly automated by machines and platform applications, particularly now in customer related procedures such as check in, boarding and baggage handling. This has largely depended on the progress of digital technologies, such as bar and QR codes, which have simplified operations and enabled passengers to become logistical workers of their own mobilities. In this paper, we explore the development of automative procedures in airports in China, where there has been a broad based societal push for the digitalisation of everyday life. Focusing on Beijing Capital and Daxing airports, we discuss how the standardisation of airport automation has been hampered by cultural specificities of the Chinese travelling public. As well, we reflect on the difficulties and opportunities that China faces in innovating beyond Western-led standards. The paper finally offers some conclusions on the frictions encountered between international mobilities, automation and geopolitics.
