Abstract
Initially produced after the 2016 release of Landsat Collection 1, Level-3 Landsat Science Products (LSP) represent biophysical properties of the Earth's surface and are research-quality and applications-ready. Generated from Landsat U.S. Analysis Ready Data (ARD) inputs, the newly released Landsat Collection 2 LSP contain calibration and data improvements, allowing for more exact measurements in data acquired since 1982. The Landsat Burned Area product (available for data acquired 1984-present) is designed to identify burned areas across all ecosystems (e.g., forests, shrublands, and grasslands). Accurate and complete data on fire locations and burned areas can help quantify trends and patterns, characterize drivers of fire occurrence, project future fire pattern behavior, and benefit assessments of fire impacts on both natural and social systems. The Dynamic Surface Water Extent product provides raster layers that represent surface water inundation per-pixel and can help provide information about annual and interannual dynamics of surface water extent. The Landsat Fractional Snow-Covered Area product provides per-pixel fractional snow cover maps that indicate the percentage of pixels covered by snow. Since snow cover is spatially and temporally variable and is often concentrated in remote or inaccessible land regions, remotely sensed data is a feasible approach to measure and monitor snow cover change. Landsat’s spatial resolution offers the capability to resolve snow cover patterns across topographically complex mountainous regions. This poster provides information on the beneficial uses of Landsat Science Products and how to download the data. Details about Collection 2 improvements will also be discussed.
