Description:
Globally, small and transient water bodies remain poorly mapped. At the same time, vegetation encroachment, limited sensor resolutions, and cloud cover hinder the ability to map inland water features using current field, airborne, and spaceborne remote sensing technologies. Given the difficulty of access, harsh weather, and data acquisition limitations, there have been very few studies on small water bodies, wetlands, or transient water. Precipitation-induced soil saturation leads to flooding and landslides. Socio-political implications to these studies include human displacement and changes to global carbon sequestration due to changes in water availability, increases in flood and drought frequency, changing transportation routes, and destruction from floods and landslides.
This session seeks papers addressing remote sensing techniques that are sensitive to fine-scale changes in surface water presence for a variety of different physiographic land covers, as well as spatial and temporal resolutions. All methodologies and datasets are additionally welcomed, including optical, microwave, and downscaled products using remote sensing and GIS.
