Abstract
The Mayan Train is a transportation project that aims to effectively connect four states of The Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico. One of these states is Quintana Roo in which the main source of income is tourism. Due to this, there has been an abrupt population growth. In this study we try to understand the risk perception of the community in comparison to the actual infrastructure capaticy of Puerto Morelos. Puerto Morelos is one of the newest municipalities in the state of Quintana Roo. We developed a survey focusing on the risk perception of individuals. We analyzed the statisitics of the survey using a Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). We also performed eighteen interviews with residents and key informants to understand what they think about the project and why. Our key informants had different backgrounds including water systems and distribution, solid waste management, hydrology and residual waste.
This study hopes to understand whether the municipality is prepared for the construction of the Mayan Train in terms of carrying capacity, urban planning, and overall climate change. Although tourism involves infrastructure development, unplanned urbanization can affect the quality of life of residents and eventually the tourism industry itself. This study aims to explain why it is important to apply sustainability in industry, innovation and infrastructure for sustainable communities and cities.
