Description:
This session aims to bring together spatial researchers and educators at the intersection of spatial data analysis, teaching, and scientific reasoning. Usually, these topics are siloed in separate domains of spatial methodology, GIScience education, and philosophy of science. By experimenting with how to integrate them, we hope to go beyond frequent mechanical applications of spatial methods and tools, and gain results that are better tested and explanations that are surprising beyond confirming the expected. The potential is to change the way students think about analyzing spatial data by emphasizing the logic of scientific inquiry. In this context, the goal of the session is to present and discuss early work on frameworks and teaching materials that integrate (spatial) data science and scientific reasoning. This discussion will also focus on how to address current impediments for such an integration related to time, effort, and understanding of how to translate concepts such as falsification to methods like exploratory spatial data analysis.
