Abstract Guidelines

Abstracts are limited to 250 words and should describe the presentation's purpose, methods, and conclusions.

  • Do not use bulleted lists, underlining, boldface type, italics, subscripts, or superscripts.

  • Do not include any codes for justification, hyphenation, line height, line centering, margins, spacing, fonts, page centering, page numbering, suppression, or tabs.

  • Do not include your name, affiliation, phone number, or e-mail address in the body of the abstract.

  • AAG will not edit your abstract; you are responsible for any spelling, grammatical, and typographical errors.

  • AAG recommends using active voice, avoiding complex jargon, and spelling out abbreviations in abstract text.

Selecting Keywords

  • Keywords may be compound (such as "political geography").

  • Keywords should generally be nouns instead of adjectives or adverbs.

  • Keywords must be separated by commas.

Tips for Presenters

  • Reach out to your session organizer and chair on how the session will be run.

  • Network and make connections: Meet your co-presenters by introducing yourself before the meeting and before the presentation.

  • Consider preparing virtual handouts, digital copies of your paper or presentation, or other follow-up items for participants.

  • Anticipate the needs of attendees with disabilities. AAG recommends researching techniques to design graphics to suit neurodiversity or visually impaired attendees. Give content advisories before presenting subject matter containing violence; graphic imagery, including racist imagery; discussion of suicide or substance abuse.

  • Put your best foot forward: Respectful of time limits and come well-prepared, having thoroughly rehearsed your presentation.
