Abstract
In 1995, the Department of Geography at the University of Heidelberg, the oldest university within the boundaries of the Federal Republic of Germany, celebrated 100 years of regular geography lectures in the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. An examination of the encyclopedic Heidelberger Gelehrtenlexikon, a collection of biographical entries on all professors employed in this university from its foundation in 1386 until 1986, reveals a much longer yet sporadic history of geography. By examining which professors had studied geography, lectured on geography or rejected to do so, were appointed as professors of geography and served as such before continuous lecturing in geography started in 1895, this paper aims to contribute to a better understanding of the diverse origins of geographical learning, teaching and research in the university that shape the discipline's interdisciplinary connectivity up until today.
