Abstract
This paper explores the way COVID-19 in prisons has the potential to disrupt the entrenchment of the carceral landscape. I explore the interplay between prisons and the communities that operate them in Pennsylvania’s coal region. This work, disrupted by COVID-19, reflects the disruptions that COVID-19 creates for the prison system’s status quo. My analysis deploys a feminist geographic lens to illuminate the everyday practices of containment that reshape the cultural landscape in such a way as to make containment self-evident. I then propose some questions for discussion about what, if anything, the pandemic may reshape about prison’s entrenchment in rural communities in the United States.
