Travel behaviors and transport mode choice of older adults in Mexico City

Abstract

Populations around the world are aging, fertility is declining, and people are living longer and have healthier lives compared to previous cohorts. In developed countries, the increasing longevity combined with a rapidly declining fertility is causing fast growth of older adults' populations. Mexico City represents an interesting case study, as it is the largest city in Latin America that is going through a demographic transition. Hence, it becomes crucial to identify the best ways to provide transportation solutions and better address the mobility needs of this growing sector of the society. This current papers seeks to investigate the everyday mobility of older adults living in Mexico City by looking at their travel behaviors and transport mode choice. I analyze these patterns by using the Origin-destination Survey in Households in Mexico City Metropolitan Area, 2017. Finally I compare these results to similar mobility studies conducted in cities in the Global North.
