Abstract
Parks are an important element for city dwellers due to their multifaceted benefits encompassing physical and psychological well-being and environmental sustainability. This study was focused on the safety and inclusivity issues of parks in Dhaka, Bangladesh, in light of SDG-11. The aim was to identify parks in Dhaka city and their management system towards promoting inclusivity and safety for citizens. A mixed-method approach was followed in this study. Literature focused broadly on park management systems and challenges in cities. However, it is essential to understand the role and responsibility of different stakeholders and the effectiveness of management strategies in addressing issues such as safety, accessibility, and inclusivity.
The results revealed that four different organizations manage and maintain the parks. The spatial distribution pattern of parks within the city is not uniform, which deprived mostly the poor citizens. The majority of the parks are located in the affluent areas of Dhaka city. The analysis of parks in Dhaka City has revealed a complex array of issues that significantly impact their inclusivity and safety. Moreover, infrastructural assessments underscored deficiencies in amenities, mostly in the poor urban regions. The findings highlighted the need for enhancing facilities for individuals who are differently abled, children, women, and elderly people.
Addressing these issues requires comprehensive, multi-faceted approach. Enhancing security, developing infrastructure, reforming park design to be more inclusive, ensuring equitable distribution of parks, engaging in proper planning, and implementing effective monitoring systems are all crucial steps towards creating safer and more welcoming parks for the citizens.
