Abstract
Kentucky’s coal industry plays an important role in the US energy landscape. There has been a precipitous decline in coal production due to global concerns about climate change, environmental impact of using fossil fuels, growth in solar and wind energy generation, low natural gas prices. The decline has impacted the economy in several ways resulting in job losses and economic instability in Kentucky. First, we examine the trends in awareness of key environmental terms and assess environmental justice concerns across mining and non-mining county residents in Kentucky. Secondly, we apply the ordered logistic regression (ologit) to analyze respondent attitudes towards suitability of different energy types (solar, wind, biomass, natural gas) in replacing coal. We conducted a statewide survey of 675 respondents in 117 counties. The ordered logistic regressions reveal that there is a significant relationship in the survey responses. Developing informed and inclusive energy policies such as awareness for renewables, communication strategies by stakeholders that resonate with the people of Kentucky is critical to making the transition to a more sustainable energy future.
