Abstract
This literature review examines the health impacts of air pollution on lower socioeconomic communities, focusing on how environmental inequalities contribute to disparate health outcomes. Numerous studies highlight that low-income neighborhoods and marginalized communities are disproportionately exposed to air pollutants, such as particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide, due to proximity to high-traffic areas, industrial facilities, and limited green spaces. This review synthesizes research on the health consequences of such exposure, including higher incidences of respiratory conditions, cardiovascular diseases, and premature mortality in these populations. The findings emphasize the need for targeted environmental policies and public health interventions to mitigate these impacts and promote environmental equity. By consolidating current knowledge, this review underscores the intersection of social justice and environmental health, calling attention to policy gaps and future research directions critical for safeguarding vulnerable populations from pollution-related health risks.
