Abstract
This study investigates the evolution of park provision and demographic distribution in the central city of Shanghai in 2000,2010 and 2020, focusing on equity in park access. Using census and park data, it examines park availability in terms of quantity, spatial distribution, and quality, alongside changes in the population structure, particularly among vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and migrant populations.
Results show a significant increase in the number and area of parks, with park service coverage rising. However, disparities persist. Parks within the Inner Ring provide higher accessibility, while peripheral regions have lower coverage and service gaps. The elderly population is concentrated in areas with lower park access, revealing spatial inequities. Conversely, accessibility for children improved, particularly in Pudong districts. Analyses of Gini coefficients and Lorenz curves indicate a gradual reduction in inequities over time, although imbalances remain significant for specific demographic groups. Spatial clustering analyses highlight mismatches between park accessibility and population needs, particularly for the elderly in peripheral regions.
The findings emphasize the need for targeted green space planning to address inequities. Recommendations include increasing park provision in underserved areas, enhancing accessibility, and tailoring green space planning to diverse population needs. This research provides actionable insights for promoting socially inclusive urban environments.
