Abstract
This poster presents and critically examines selected thematic maps of "separatist movements" in the Europe of the early 21st century. Examples are taken from the printed press and other news media as well as from general texts in the political affairs of the European area, published in both Europe and North America. The visual documents discussed lie at the intersection of academic and popular geopolitical discourses: they were produced especially in the context or wake of the referendums on Scottish (2014) or Catalan (2017) independence, the renewed tensions surrounding post-Brexit Northern Ireland (since 2016), or Russian ethno-national mobilization in Eastern Europe and the war in Ukraine (since 2014). Some of the challenges and possibilities of representing cartographically such a complex and diverse phenomenon as "separatism" in a single map are assessed.
