Abstract
For the past inhabitants of the elevated Interior Region of the Maya lowlands, the collection and storage of rainwater was a necessary adaptation for sustainable habitation. Previous research has shown that the ancient Maya city of Calakmul developed an elaborate system of large public reservoirs to support an expanding urban population. However, details on the nature, function, and chronology of Calakmul’s hydraulic system have yet to be revealed. In this paper, we present the initial results from our investigations in and near three of the largest four urban reservoirs at the site during the 2022 field season.
