Abstract
In view of the upcoming name changes of nine military installations named after Confederate Army Generals this study examines the history of military installation naming. Since the Civil War many installations have been named after members of both Union and Confederate armies. Naming criteria have changed often over time. By 1917 the criteria included that the name should not be not unpopular in the vicinity. Army documents provide insight into the original process of naming these nine forts and the renaming decisions.
