Abstract
Recent cuts to U.S. refugee resettlement during the Trump administration and halting progress under Biden have destabilized the nation's resettlement program. Amid a growing crisis of global displacement, events of the past five years have raised new questions about the ability of the United States to provide refuge for the forcibly displaced. Drawing on a multi-year case study of refugee resettlement organizations in Des Moines, Iowa, this paper considers the challenges and transformations taking place in U.S. refugee resettlement through examination of ongoing resettlement in a mid-sized, non-traditional immigrant destination.
