Description:
This session is devoted to discussions of the emerging political ecologies of renewable energy and the theorized energy transitions that will accompany their growing implementation across the globe. Presenters ask: what are the discourses and practices surrounding the promotion and adoption of renewable energy regimes from local to global levels? Are renewable energy technopolitical assemblages--and the energy landscapes they produce more just and/or less ecologically damaging than conventional energy systems? What kinds of socioecological conflicts are being generated by renewable energy projects, and how do these conflicts enroll a range of corporate, state, and community agents? Our aim is to interrogate a range of renewable energies (e.g., solar, biomass, wind, hydropower) being implemented in diverse geographical locales and use these cases to reflect on the different ways that energy production is being embedded within both old and new constellations of corporate and state power.
