Abstract
Ghanaian cities have become hotspots for floods with rising household vulnerabilities but limited studies exist that examine the coping and adaptive mechanisms of these households. This paper examined flood coping and adaptation strategies of flood community dwelling households (n = 45) using qualitative approach. Data gathering involved the use of in-depth interviews using interview guide as the instrument for data collection. Data gathered were analysed using the thematic analytical framework. The study revealed that households employed different coping and adaptation strategies to reduce the impact of floods and to reduce their vulnerability to floods. While the coping strategies only gave respondents temporary relief, the over-reliance on structural methods of adaptation has not protected the study population well enough against subsequent floods. The study recommends a balanced use of structural and non-structural flood control mechanisms for effective adaptation. While effective solid waste management regime, adequate provision of storm drains and regular desilting of choked streams are desirable, legislative enforcement, land-use control, community education and sensitisation must be given equal attention if these interventions are to yield the desired results.
