Description:
This session urges us to rethink and broaden the definition of settler colonialism in the context of Latin America. Some questions we are interested in exploring include but are not limited to: What does it mean for the settler to “never leave?” How might this permanence and territorial (dis)possession extend beyond material bodies? How might the settler colonialism analytic help us unpack racial hierarchies and challenge the hegemonic logic of mestizaje? How might it explain the ongoing violent appropriation of Indigenous and Afrodescendant territories in different parts of Latin America, despite legal frameworks aimed at securing territorial rights? How could the settler colonialism lens allow us to understand Indigenous struggles for autonomy and sovereignty? How does settler colonialism in Latin America intersect with capitalism and imperialism? And how might the settler colonialism analytic in Latin America make new political projects thinkable, especially in conversation and solidarity with anti-colonial movements in historically recognized settler colonies?
