Abstract
The expansion of urban areas and depopulation of rural areas has been a phenomenon of global concern for the past several decades. Although rural areas provide natural resources, improved goods, and traditional culture for global society, the decline of rural areas occurs as people, primarily the young, seek their futures in larger cities. We explore the specific attributes that distinguish rural towns in decline from their counterparts that have thrived by developing a typology of rural decline and renewal. We employ a mixed methods approach using geospatial analysis and survey data to identify the associations of 1) access to vital infrastructure, 2) place attachment, and 3) sense of community to rural decline or renewal. This knowledge will contribute to a better understanding of the decline and possibilities for renewal in rural communities by providing valuable insights into future policy considerations and targeted investment opportunities.
