Abstract
The February 2022 Russian reinvasion of Ukraine will have geopolitical repercussions for decades. One of the most prominent of those was the decisions of Sweden and Finland, two of Europe’s largest neutral powers, to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). Using lexicon-based sentiment analysis of geotagged tweets from users located in Sweden and Finland, this study seeks to examine how views (defined by sentiment score in this case) of NATO changed amongst Twitter users in the two countries. Using this data will also allow for an examination of whether a user’s location (e.g., closer to areas Russia could conceivably attack) led to differences in their view of NATO The temporal range of the data examined will start from a pre-war baseline in July of 2021 to mid-way through the accession process in July of 2022. This study will provide insights into how one of, if not possibly, the largest geopolitical shifts of the century was viewed by common people in the subject countries.
