Abstract
The absence of war does not readily translate into peace. Indeed, for this reason scholars distinguish between ‘negative’ peace and ‘positive’ peace and how these interrelate with more nuanced distinctions of war and conflict in general and violence more specifically. In this paper I provide a broad overview of our present moment and consider the myriad manifestations of war, peace, and the liminal spaces in-between. Drawing on the conceptual framing of more-than-human geographies, I underscore the socio-nature foundation of contemporary ‘war-making’ and ‘peace-building’ practices. In doing so, I highlight the contemporary, and contradictory spatial, and temporal materiality of war-and-peace.
