Abstract
The research presented here is based on the position that the tight integration of systems and more specifically spatial analytic, optimization, and simulation systems into a single spatial decision support system has significant advantages in a basic research context. Among these are greater modeling flexibility, increased efficiency and decreased research development time, reduced need for training and increased usability, reduction of user error, and increased process automation. Most importantly, however, in the conduct of basic scientific research, such an integration increases the ability of researchers to perceive the unanticipated nuances of modeling choice or interactions among outputs of multiple models. This is particularly the case when complex spatial systems are under study, given that the visualization of spatial arrangements can be a crucial component of interpreting results. We present here a design for a tightly integrated system that will encourage flexible and creative basic research.
