Abstract
In India, the Smart City Mission, launched in the year 2015 was envisioned as one of the flagship and ambitious projects in the country for sustainable and inclusive urban development. The unprecedented urban growth and unplanned development in the country have necessitated the need and implementation of the smart city concept. However, the mission has been facing a multitude of challenges and issues which are witnessed on the ground now.
Therefore, this paper describes the Smart City Mission of India, the process followed in the planning of the smart cities under the Mission, and the implementation of the projects thus identified.
By employing both primary and secondary surveys the qualitative and quantitative data is being collected and analyzed on the basis of selected parameters.
The paper concludes the positive impact that the mission has made, and it also attempts to identify the core challenges faced during its implementation which hamper the Mission from attaining its identified goals and objectives.
