Abstract
The state of West Bengal has a history of both in-migration and out-migration. Not only economic reasons but environmental hazards also play a crucial role. The paper tries to determine the various reasons that accelerate male and female migration towards West Bengal, India. The paper also explores the main states where male and female migration to West Bengal happens the most. In order to fulfill the objectives, I have used the migration data of West Bengal from the census data of 2011. I used STATA software to find out the answers. I ran multiple linear regressions for both males and females. I have also used R studio to make a chord diagram to explore the migration flow towards West Bengal. The paper reveals that the general migration trend of India shows that the main reasons for male and female migration are mainly work/employment, and marriage respectively but the situation is different in the case of West Bengal, where there is no such particular reason that plays a dominant role. However, migration from adjacent states has got an important role to play. Migration of both males and females decreases with an increase in the distance; thus, we find more migrants from the nearby states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Jharkhand, and fewer from states like Jammu and Kashmir. The chord diagram reveals that male and female migrants mainly come from Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, and Jharkhand. The paper also shows that heavy out-migration occurs in Bihar mainly because of economic reasons.
