Abstract
Expos are generally considered one of the largest global exhibitions designed to showcase achievements of nations and have an enormous effect on the host city before, during and for many years after the event. Expo 2020 in Dubai, United Arab Emirates is the first time the event is being held in the region encompassing the Middle East, North Africa and South Asia. The aim of the study is to investigate the effects that Expo has on tourism, urban development, and investment. Preliminary results indicate significant effects on different sectors of the economy. In addition, the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan states that District 2020 (the Expo site) will become a major hot spot for economic growth and a center for future exhibitions and tourism. Based on the findings, recommendations are made to take this unique opportunity to establish exceptional measures in planning and policy procedures, which not only benefit the event, but also align with Dubai’s overall urban sustainability plan.
