Description:
Socio-technical imaginaries of agri-food futures are simultaneously calls for the reordering of space. Sometimes these are quite explicit, as in the “land sparing” ethos that underpins vertical farming, intensified livestock production, and other visions of agriculture controlled through enclosure. Yet sometimes the geographic implications of agri-food futuring are occluded or even unforeseen. In this panel, participants will discuss the various agri-food futuring projects they have been studying – whether at Silicon Valley food tech pitch nights, on farms enrolled in corporate regenerative agriculture initiatives, in well-capitalized vertical farms and land-based aquaculture ventures, or in the co-production of “The Global Food System” – and speculate about how and with what broader implications these projects might reconfigure places, spaces and the different flows and relationships that connect them.
